The Afghanistan War Commission is a bipartisan legislative commission established by the U.S. Congress in December 2021 to conduct a comprehensive review of key decisions related to U.S. military, intelligence, foreign assistance, and diplomatic involvement in Afghanistan from June 2001 to August 2021.

In its first interim report to Congress one year after its official launch, the Afghanistan War Commission (AWC) detailed its achievements to date, its research priorities, and its plans for the coming year as it develops the comprehensive assessment, lessons learned and policy recommendations from the 20-year war Congress mandated by August 2026.

Our Scope

On December 27, 2021, Section 1094 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2022 (P.L. 117-81)established the Afghanistan War Commission to:

(1) “examine the key strategic, diplomatic, and operational decisions that pertain to the war in Afghanistan during the relevant period, including decisions, assessments, and events that preceded the war in Afghanistan;” and

(2) “to develop a series of lessons learned and recommendations for the way forward that will inform future decisions by Congress and policymakers throughout the United States Government.”

  • COMMISSIONERS

    Including the co-chairs, the commission is composed of 16 commissioners, eight appointed by Democratic and eight appointed by Republican members of Congress.

    The Commission is currently seeking resume submissions for a variety of staff positions to be filled in 2023.
